I've Been Waiting

~ From Tuesday, February 19, 2013 ~

Tristan got his driver's license yesterday.

And today, this happened in my driveway.

People wonder if I'm scared, how I am ready to allow this to happen.
I've been preparing him for this day for over a year now.
I don't know who is more ready, him or me.

I was dancing with joy, jumping up and down, singing hallelujahs.

Wrestling Banquet

Last Monday night was Tristan's wrestling banquet.  It was held at one of the wrestlers's houses.  His dad had a pretty fancy set up in their garage, so we hung out there and ate and talked before the awards.  He also had a fireplace outside on the patio where the boys hung out some of the time.

This is Tristan with Coach Peanut.  The other coaches were Bobby Aucoin and Coach Roach.  I missed getting pictures of them.  Tristan really loved wrestling this year.  He made some new friends and learned some cool new moves.  He suffered some bruises and gashes and gained about six pounds of muscle.  (Some of that was probably gained during Junior Bronco Wrestling.)

Overall, I think it was a very good season.  The sport of wrestling was totally new to all of us and we learned as we went.  I'm very proud of Tristan for being so willing to try something new, for going after what he wants and working hard at it.  I never thought I'd hear myself say this, but looking forward to next season!

Tristan's Sweet Sixteen

~ From Friday, March 1, 2013 ~

To celebrate Tristan's Sixteenth Birthday, we planned a laser tag party on the USS Orleck.

Tristan, Nick Pietz, Ethan, Zac Goad, Phillip Comeaux, Bryce Anderson,
Ty Anderson, Gabriel Wing, and Jared Vermillion.

The USS Orleck was built in 1945 by Consolidated Steel Shipbuilding in Orange, Texas.  The USS Orleck DD886 was launched into the Sabine River on May 12 1945, and entered duty on September 15.  She served proudly in Korea and Vietnam, earning many prestigious awards and citations for participation in battle and service to her country, including four battle starts earned during the Korean Conflict.

She was decommissioned in 1982, transferred to the Turkish government, renamed the TCG Yucetpe, and served the Turkish Navy in the Persian Gulf in 1991.  Turkey donated the ship to the Southeast Texas War Memorial and Heritage Foundation in 1999 to serve as a museum ship.  She returned to her original berth in Orange by tow August 11, 2000 where she served as a museum ship until Hurricane Rita resulted in the loss of her berth.  She is now docked in the Lake Charles River and serves as a museum during the day, and an awesome background for laser tag at night.

Boys being goofy!

In the picture on the right is Gavin Hilliard.  He was not in the picture above.
I did not realize it but a couple boys had gone to the restroom when I was taking pictures.

Andrew Aucoin refusing to let me take his picture.

Jackson insisted we have a surprise party for Tristan.  When we could not arrange for the party to be a surprise, we sent Tristan out for a while and made everyone hide so that we could jump out and yell "SURPRISE!!"  Jackson was in heaven.

Zac hid behind the flag, while Ethan hid behind a chip.

Everyone hiding!

Jackson was so excited.  So was Tristan.

Most of my pictures of everyone playing did not turn out well, but I did get these.

Lighting the candles on his piece of cake.

Everyone had so much fun!
The ship is now all that Jackson and Ethan can talk about and they are both hoping we will
throw them laser tag parties on the ship as well.

Band Festival

Last Friday was Band Festival.

The little boys and I went to the Civic Center to hear Tristan's band play.

Tristan is first chair trumpet and he even had a solo.
They played Into the Clouds, Creed, and a third number, which was a march.
I recorded them, but they were really shaky because of the little guy on my lap, helping me.
I'm trying to find it on YouTube.

They played really well and earned straight Superiors, including a Superior in sight reading.

Junior Bronco Wrestling

Tristan has been working hard too, but at wrestling.
He has been wrestling for the Junior Bronco Wrestling Club,
in the Cadet division, 126 pound weight class.

His first tournament was three Saturdays ago, March 9, in Sulphur.  Tristan did really well.

He was pinned in the third round of his first match, which sent him to the loser bracket.
Then he wrestled and won two more matches, both with a pin in the second round, putting him father along in the bracket toward third place.

He then had to wrestle the same boy he wrestled first, again.
The winner of this match would wrestle for third place in their weight class.
This match was almost immediately after Tristan's last match, so he did not have much time to rest.
Tristan lost to him in the first round, placing him fifth or sixth overall in the tournament.

Last week, March 16, Tristan and I went to Lafayette High School for another tournament.
He wrestled well, but lost both his matches and was out.

Here he is wrestling with Matthew Aucion while waiting for his division to start.

This past Saturday, March 23, Tristan wrestled in the State Tournament
at Comeaux High School in Lafayette.  He did really well.

His first match was against the boy who was ranked first in the state.
We figured he would not win this match, but Tristan stood up well against him.

He lost the match with a tech, meaning the other boy scored 15 points up on Tristan, so the match was called in the second round.  The score was 15-0.  The boy actually was a very polite wrestler, getting his points and not forcing Tristan into any rough wrestling positions, not trying to prove what a stud he was.  Especially knowing that Tristan was a beginner wrestler.  He even let Tristan up instead of holding out for the pin because he knew he could win by points without having to pin Tristan.

Tristan with his friend, Corey, who also wrestled for Sam Houston.
During that season, they were in the same weight class, 120 pounds, but Tristan has moved up after putting on some muscle during the high school season.  Tristan actually wrestled him last week because Corey's weight had fluctuated and he was also wrestling in the 126 weight class that week, but had moved back down to the 120 weight class for the state tournament.

After losing the first match, Tristan moved to the loser bracket and got ready for his second match.
He was excited about it, because the guy he was supposed to wrestle had just lost to a guy that Tristan had pinned the week before.  He won the match in the second round, when he pinned the guy.  Tristan said the boy never really fought too hard to get out of the pin.

This win moved Tristan up in the ranks, toward the third place match.
His next match was to be against the loser of a match, so we tried to find it so that we could watch and see how the boys wrestled.  We got to the mat and found out that one of the boys had broken his arm during the match and was being taken out on a stretcher.  It was very scary!

This forced the boy with the broken arm to forfeit this match, moving him to the loser bracket and the next wrestler for Tristan to wrestle.  But, because he was unable to wrestle, it forced him to forfeit the match against Tristan too, giving Tristan a bye and moving him ahead in the bracket,
and one match closer to third place.

Tristan waiting for his next match and watching his next opponent pin a guy in less than thirty seconds.

He wrestled the next match and did really well.
He almost pinned the boy, but was not able to get both the shoulders down completely for the pin.
He thought he had the boy pinned and was really frustrated that the referee would not call it.
The boy was able to get out the pin and turned it around on Tristan for the pin.

Tristan was really upset to lose the match, both because he thought he should have been given credit for the pin and also because he thought his shoulder was off the floor and not really in a pin position when the ref called the pin against him.  He also was upset because the ref called the pin with only two seconds left in the round and Tristan thought he had held out long enough to be able to recollect himself and wrestle for a third round.  At the time of the pin, Tristan was ahead by two points, and he felt that he could have won,
but he put all his energy into pinning the boy and was distracted, physically and mentally,
when he did not get the pin.

This is the video of Tristan wrestling that match.  http://youtu.be/xb0aQZHca9U
It is the second round, where Tristan almost won, but then lost.  Watch the coaches at the end.
Their reaction to Tristan's loss made me laugh.  It was a pretty exciting match!

He did really great and I was so proud of him.  When the match was over, Tristan's friend, Andrew, who's been wrestling forever told me that he was really impressed with Tristan's performance.  He said that the boy had been wrestling a very long time and for Tristan to do so well against him was very impressive.  You can hear Andrew's voice on the video coaching Tristan.  He was sitting on the floor next to me.

The boy that Tristan lost to ended up losing his next match to a very good wrestler.
I don't think Tristan would have been much of a threat to him either.

Tristan's loss placed him either sixth or seventh.  We are not really sure which one.
I was so happy for Tristan.  He was happy too, but it took him a few minutes to come around after being so upset over his last match.  There were fifteen boys in his division at this tournament, so I think he did extremely well, especially for being so new to the sport.

Tristan absolutely LOVES wrestling and can't wait to get back out there on the mat and learn more.  He has come so far in just a few short months, even weeks.  His first wrestling match was actually just several weeks ago.  Even though I had HUGE reservations at the beginning of the season and still feel like a wrestling match is basically an all-out brawl, I have come around and actually am enjoying being a wrestling mom.

Jackson-isms

~  "I have bad news.  We are lost in the kitchen!"

~  "MOM!!  Are you listening?  Did you hear ALL of my words?"

~  "You die when you go to the flower place.  I don't ever want to go there."  (The flower place turned out to be the cemetery.)

~  "We are pretending that your bathroom is the beach.  And the floor is the sand.  And the tub is the water. Can we take a beach water bath?"

~  "I know that jokin' means kiddin', so I guess I know everything."

~  "That's cool.....for real!"

~  "I wasn't talkin' to you.  I was talkin' to myself."

~  "What planet is heaven on?  Mercury or Venus?"

~  "Ethan, you're not being fair."

Do You See What I See?

You might remember my original post about the coconut in my mom's fruit basket.
Well today, we were in Wal-Mart buying some fruit to take on our picnic to Millennium Park
when we came across a pile of coconuts in the produce section.

I swear, they looked like little animals peering out at us, or even a village
of furry little brown people, each one with its own little personality.

The New Millennium Park

We are out for Spring Break this week.
Tristan is taking a Life Guarding course at SPAR in Sulphur.

Today the rest of us went to Millennium Park with our friends, the Laracuentes.
The park re-opened this past Saturday and is very, very nice.
It has a splash pad, a walking path, and lots of new and fun places to play.

After we dropped Tristan at SPAR, we went to get some things for a picnic
and then met the Laracuentes at the park.  This is one of the areas that Savannah and I worked on when we helped rebuild the park after it burned down.

The little boys love to swing, so we spent most of our time in the tot lot with them
while the bigger kids ran all over exploring.

Savannah with Aliana and Ethan with Jalil.

We love the Laracuentes, but we don't get to see them as often as we would like.
They live in Sulphur and with us going to church in Jennings, we don't cross paths much anymore.
We were so excited when Alison called and made this date with us.

We had a blast, even though it was chilly and windy.  Can't wait to see them again,
and can't wait to go back to Millennium Park and get our splash on when it warms up a bit!

Look What's Cookin'

Homemade Pancake Syrup

I have been making my own syrup for a while now.  We use so much and seem to constantly be running out, plus it can be pretty expensive and I never really found a syrup that was a favorite.

When I visited my cousin, Ginger, we had her homemade syrup and I loved it.  It also reminded me of when my mom used to make it, and so I decided to start making my own.

Well, today we found ourselves again with no syrup.  I've been meaning to make some for a week or so, but it has just been one of those things that keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the to-do list.  The boys insisted on having syrup for their french toast sticks, so I went to make some syrup.  We were out of maple flavoring. But we had vanilla, of course, which I thought would work.  So I looked online to see if there were people out there making pancake syrup without maple and came across this recipe which looked like it would be good.  It is really good.

1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup corn syrup
1 cup water (3/4 cup if you like your syrup thicker)
1 teaspoon vanilla

Add all ingredients together.  Bring to a boil and continue to cook gently for three minutes.  In the picture it looks more like caramel, but after it boiled, it looked just like regular pancake syrup.

I read a comment on the recipe that a lady left.  She said that she adds 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1/4 tsp butter flavoring, and a few drops of almond extract.  Sounds good.  I might try that next time.

STEEL Soccer

Ethan's been working hard at soccer.

Their team played at the Crossroad Cup Tournament in Alexandria on March 9th.
They are a U10 team, which means all their players are at least 8, but younger than 10.
Apparently this tournament did not have a bracket for just U10 teams,
only a U12 bracket, so we played U11 and U12 teams.

Meeting before the game with the coaches for a pep talk.

Warming up.

The team in white is also from Moss Bluff.
They are the U11 Gunners.

I don't remember where the boys in orange are from, maybe Alexandria,
but they were called Dynamo.

Watching all the action from the sidelines.  They lost both games.  It was really windy out there and Ethan said that the ball was hard to get to because the wind was blowing it around the field.

Last week, the coaches put together a family night so parents could see what it is like to be on the field and to see how hard they work at practice. Savannah and I went and had a great time.
I think my pants were about to fall off in this picture!

The next weekend, on the 16th of March, the coaches arranged for our boys to play in two friendly games on our brand new soccer fields here in Moss Bluff. One between the Sulphur Soccer Club and another between the DeRidder U10 team. Ethan could not play because he was already registered for the Dad & Me Campout at Camp Edgewood.  At that game, the team decided to make the Llama their official mascot.

Yesterday, the boys went to DeRidder to play the Beauregard Soccer Club again.  Ethan rode with Landon because neither Allen nor I could go.  Ethan said he had a lot of fun.  The coaches got the kids a picnic box from the local deli.  They ate between the two games.  They won the first game and lost the second.

After the two scheduled friendly games, they arranged to have a parent/kid game.  Landon's mom could not stay for the parent game, but I saw the pictures online and it looked like everyone had a great time.  Sure wish we could have been there.  Here they are with the DeRidder team, showing off their new llama sign.  Ethan is the blonde just to the left of the boy squatting down in the red and black.

They have one more soccer tournament in April in Shreveport.
